A hamstring injury can occur when excessive load is placed on the hamstring muscles. At Limp In Leap Out Physiotherapy clinic in Belfield, we have a tremendous amount of experience assisting this type of injury – due to our years of football sports coverage experience.
The hamstring muscles activate and are pivotal to specific stages of walking, running or kicking. Severity is graded as:
- Grade 1 – up to 50% of muscle fibres are damaged
- Grade 2 – 50-95% of muscle fibres are damaged
- Grade 3 – total muscle rupture
During an acute hamstring injury, bleeding can occur initially at the site of the injury, followed by an inflammatory process that assists in the healing phase. Ensure you don’t stretch within first 48 hours as this can aggravate the injury.
